PROJECTS

I-285/I-20 East Interchange

The project focuses on:
  • Reconstructing I-285/I-20 East Interchange ramps with more direct alignments and additional lanes where warranted
  • Constructing new connecting lanes, also known as collector-distributor lanes, along westbound I-20 and an additional lane in the eastbound I-20 connecting lane road between the I-285/I-20 East Interchange and Wesley Chapel Road
  • Adding auxiliary lanes along I-20 and I-285*
  • Replacing the Miller Road and Fairington Road bridges over I-20, and the I-20 bridge over Snapfinger Creek
  • Widening the I-285 northbound bridge over Snapfinger Road
  • Constructing new noise barriers where feasible and reasonable per the preliminary noise impact assessment

Connecting lanes are also known as collector-distributor (CD) lanes. These lanes run parallel to the main travel lanes of an interstate or highway, connecting them to access roads or entrance ramps in order to improve traffic flow, speed, and safety. Auxiliary lanes are the extra lanes alongside the main lanes that give drivers more time to merge in or out when entering or exiting the highway.

I-285 Eastside Bridge Replacement

The I-285 Eastside Bridge Replacements project replaced the existing bridges over I-285 at Glenwood Road, Redwing Circle, and Covington Highway in DeKalb County, Georgia. This project is an I-285 Advanced Improvement Project (AIP), part of the Major Mobility Investment Program (MMIP). The project provides local road improvements earlier, mitigates traffic challenges during the construction of the future express lane projects, provides early operational improvements to general purpose lanes, and helped maintain healthy competition among construction developer partners. The bridge replacements at Glenwood Road and Covington Highway were replaced at off-set alignments and remained open to traffic during construction while the Redwing Circle bridge required a detour.

I-285 Westbound Auxiliary Lane Extension

The I-285 Westbound Auxiliary Lane Extension project adds an auxiliary lane along I-285 westbound between Roswell Road and Riverside Drive, as well as replace the I-285/Mt. Vernon Highway bridge in Fulton County, Georgia. This project is an I-285 Advanced Improvement Project (AIP), part of the Major Mobility Investment Program (MMIP). The project will provide local road improvements, mitigate traffic challenges during the construction of the future express lane projects, nd provide early operational improvements to general purpose lanes.
